      We had a simular situation and the vendor made the following change … here is our senerio …

      When the line dropped another connection was established ……  the message went across “line a” and the ack came back on “line b” ….. the vendors response was …. We disabled the keepalives in the IPSEC configuration on our side to resolve

        We had the vendor disable the keepalives in the IPSEC configuration on their side of the interface on the VPN.

          Can you check to see if you have an entry in your resolv.conf file …. here is an example …. this should resolve slow response time …. John

          # more /etc/resolv.conf

          nameserver      123.45.67.890

              Can you look at your resolv.conf file in /etc …. we had a put an entry in that looks like ….. nameserver xxx.xx.xx.xxx …. this may solve your problem
