What qualifications do you look for?

Just a quick note to ask what qualifications you look when recruiting or selecting staff for cross training.  I’m assuming a techo background with no TCL programming?

We run on Unix and have almost all our interfaces in TCL, so for us, I figure a good level of understanding with:

communications – FTP, TCP/IP, HTTP, Web Services; and

Unix scripting.

A few ‘nice to have’, including:

Languages – TCL, Java, SQL; and

XML – XML, XML Schema, WSDL; and

Tools – CVS.

I would look for some understanding of clinical systems and processes. Also common sense is an oft overlooked quality, and the ability to think laterally.
