Using Version 5.7 client for version 5.4 host

We are in the process of upgrading from version 5.4 to version 5.7.  I have both clients installed on my desktop and I would like to know if the version 5.7 client is backwards compatible ?  I realize there are several new features with 5.7, but would those new features cause a problem if connecting to a 5.4 instance ?

Can I use the 5.7 client to connect to both host versions ?
