Unix Sendmail

Hello,

We are currently in the process of transitioning our Cloverleaf system from a version 5.2 Windows Based system to a version 5.6 Unix based system.  We currently have a tcl proc that connects to our Exchange server via SMTP, and sends out e-mail alerts for alerts in Cloverleaf, or incorrect messages from ancillary applications.

What I am looking for are any helpful hints, tips, or pieces of code, for the transition to using the Unix mail system for e-mailing.  If you have not transitioned over to Unix, but are currently using it for e-mailing, how did you go about designing your code, and do you have any suggestions or lessons learned for someone basically starting anew?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How are you currently doing it in windows through TCL.  Are you using the smtp package from the tcllib library?  If so, then it should still work with no problem as long as your new unix machine can ping the smtp server.  That is currently what we use when we send mail.  A lot more flexible then trying to manipulate sendmail to send a message.

Then it sounds like you are connecting using the socket command and building your rfc compliant data to send.   If that is the case, it should definitely be portable.

We do connect using the socket command.  I do not know what the acronym “rfc” means in ‘rfc compliant data’.  Along with the need to change our hard coded IP addresses, we are not sure if we will be going to a SAN, but we are moving to an active active system (we also write these errors to log files), either way we will have to address our file structure references (Win vs. Unix).

We are also wondering if we could take advantage of the Unix sendmail feature, and make our procedure more streamlined and reliable.

On Unix you can check the “man pages” to get lots of documentation for sendmail and mailx (more user-friendly front-end to sendmal) by using the commands man sendmail or man mailx. Both are fairly easy to use. On our system I use both depending on what I want to send. In a tcl proc you could use

In alerts I use
