SAML authentication protocol for vpn or outside network com?

Our Security advisor has indicated we need to be using a protocol called SAML for communication with outside our network vendors. We currently have 2 with which we commmunicate via vpn tunnels. Has anyone else had to implement this or are familiar with it. Any information would be helpful.
