I too have become somewhat uncomfortable upgrading the OS and Cloverleaf at the same time and wondering “Which comes first, the chicken or the egg”.
I don’t like asking the same question 10 times to try and get a majority answer out of the varied responses.
To eliminate this concern I have created 4 LPARs on our 2 HACMP AIX servers.
I use 2 of the LPARs for current production with HACMP fail-over and plan to use the other 2 LPARs for future upgrade to cloverleaf and/or OS.
I currently have AIX 5.2 with Cloverleaf 5.2.1P2 running in productuion and configured the other 2 LPARS with AIX 5.3 with upgrade to HACMP and SNA and plan to load Cloverleaf 5.5.# on it.
This way I can upgrade both the OS and cloverleaf without having any impact on the current prodcution LPARs.
It is sort of like getting a new box with each upgrade.
Once the upgrade is done then I will attempt to switch the identities of the LPARs.
This is my plan for our next upgrade so I do not know if I will be able to switch the identy of the LPARs with success.
If I pull this off I think it will be a great method for future upgrades and certainly better than any approach I’ve used thus far.
