I’ve been considering developing some metrics scripts and web pages for our interfaces. On the surface, that seems useful, but I’m not sure exactly what sort of metrics would actually be useful to management and other teams in IS. Do y’all collect interface metrics? If so, what are you measuring and has it been useful to your team?

        Max,

I currently provide management with the total number of inbound and outbound messages processed through Cloverleaf during the previous month. I also provide them with a historial chart of total inbound and outbound messages for the past 3 years at the end of the year.

Seeing these charts has allowed us to upgrade our servers and staff based on the increase in number of interfaces and messages flowing through Cloverleaf.

Jim, may I ask how you collect those metrics?

We do two different things for our cloverleaf metrics.

          1. Daily total message count for each thread.

          2. For each quarter, we also do one weekly average count for each thread.  We also break that down by hour so we know when the best times are for people to send in batch jobs.  It is also nice to compare a day where we have an absurd number of messages come in and we can see what our usual hourly count is.

Other than just “interesting” facts for us, we haven’t used either of these much.  We have all of this data available, but there isn’t a huge demand as no one really knows what they want for stats.

It can be tricky when someone asks how many messages flow through cloverleaf.  Well, let me see, we have 4 sites, ### of outbound threads, ### of inbound thread, ### of messages crossing from this product to that product, certain messages only go through this site or that, ADT goes here, here, and here…so what do you want.

          Nate.

Would anyone be willing to share how you collect your metrics?  I know that newer versions of Cloverleaf have some metrics collection capabilities.  I’m curious if you can collect metrics for the entire Cloverleaf environment using the built-in tools or if people have written their own metrics collection scripts/programs.

            Thanks!

We wrote our own here that takes SMAT files and gets the information from them, dumps it to a flat file and off to a SQL dB where SSIS takes care of loading it into the dB.
