How to format NPI’s

We have a need to include NPI numbers in the Dr fields. PID-7, etc.

Does anyone know how to format the NPI into the doctor field? HL7 2.4

  We have potentially 3 identifiers for a physician. Thus the Physician fields are repeating and we use the 13th component to specify the Identifier Type Code (NPI, UPIN, and MDACC for internally assigned number) as described in Chapter 2 of the HL/7 Guide (section 2.9.52.13). In that section, you are referreed to suggested values and NPI is in that table.
  
  The repetitions can be in any order because the 13th. component identifies the type of identifier. So if someone wants the UPI or NPI, we iterate throught he field repetitions and locate the proper repetition based on the value in the 13th. component.
