how do you create a new segment within the xlate or possibly tcl. We have a system that needs a DG1 segment, but we need to make it from scratch.

    Thanks in advance.

create a variant that has [DG1] as optional where you need it.

If you copy any data to the DG1 during translate, it will show up.  If you don’t copy anything, it won’t.

ok, i know this is way easier than i am making it out to be. what we had was our HIS sent out a DG1 regardless of if it was populated or not. We have since done an upgrade and now the DG1 does not come out if not populated on admissions. We have one system that needs this. I have made the inbound variant optional and required and the same for the outbound, but nothing is working. I will post what is in our xlate already, the code is from before the upgrade.

If I am reading this correctly. The destination system needs / Requires the DG1 segment Blank or not.

If that is correct the variant for you outbound just make the segment required.

Or am I missing something ?

      Do you have BULKCOPY involved?

If not then what John suggested (making the DG1 segment required in the outbound variant) should do the trick.

If BULKCOPY is involved then I think you will need to check the first iteration of the inbound DG1 and see if it is null (pick a field that will always be populated if the DG1 segment exists). If it is null, then COPY @null to the first DG1 field in the destination message.
