barcodes

Does healthcare interfacing in general, or Cloverleaf specifically, have any part to play in barcode-enabled applications? Should I assume that such systems talk to other systems through normal HL7 interfaces and Cloverleaf would not connect to a barcode system?

Is there such a thing as a barcode bridge, where the technical path would be:

handheld device -> (wireless) -> barcode server -> Cloverleaf

      Instead of:

handheld device -> (wireless) -> barcode server -> ancillary software -> Cloverleaf

It seems that the second option requires that a barcode feature be purchased for each ancillary system, where as the first option requires just one barcode system be purchased and then integrated with Cloverleaf. The individual barcodes would have to contain enough context to identify the ancilliary function, as well as the object identity, and then Cloverleaf could provide communication to ancillary systems.

Is there any documentation or discussion on barcode integration?

      Thanks,

      Pete
