i have a question about hl7 variants. We have a variant for a recieving system that has 3 insurances.

      IN1

      [IN2]

      [IN3]

My understanding is that if a message comes through that has more than three insurances it will only allow 3 to go through. But with a particular message we found out that this is not what is happening. We had a patient with 5 insurances that went through the engine and when it got to recieving system, it got hung up. we could find no errors anywhere and wasnt sure if the recieving system can handle 5 insurances.(we have tried to contact vendor to no evail). do i have the right impression on how this works or just wrong. It was an A04 message in version 2.3.

What are the contents of the translation ?

Take the raw message and run it through the tester.

It will show you what you need to know.

The IN1,2,3 reflect 3 different lines of information for the each occurence of an insurance.  Are you seeing multiple groups of the IN1,2,3 coming in?

Unless I am missing something it looks as if the outbound variant is both optional and repeating.

Either remove Bulkcopy and copy everthing on a field / segment level and only copy the 1st insurance over or change the variant and make the IN? segments not repeaing.

The IN1, IN2, and IN3 segments do not represent 3 different insurance carriers/policies.  It is 3 different insurance segments that contain information about a single insurance carrier/policy.  Therefore, if you have a patient that has 5 different insurance carriers/policies, you will have 5 groupings of IN1, IN2, IN3 segments:

                  IN1 – Aetna

                  IN2

                  IN3

                  IN1 – MetLife

                  IN2

                  IN3

                  IN1 – Bob’s Insurance Company

                  IN2

                  IN3

                  IN1 – Medicare

                  IN2

                  IN3

                  IN1 – Workman’s Comp.

                  IN2

                  IN3

Usuallly these insurance groupings are listed based on the order in which they get paid.  It is called “Coordination of Benefits Priority” (or something simliar).
