Stopped thread hanging engine

While troubleshooting a crashed interfaced system I stopped the thread that sends to the down system.  Much to my surprise the associated engine stopped processing messages routed to it for all threads.

I was able to stop and start the engine and all was well.

Anyone have this type of problem and information on how to correct.
