SMAT File Size

I find posts on this issue but do not see guidance on what is too big.

Currently we cycle every 12 hours.

The biggest msg file I see for the last 2 weeks is about 8 meg and the idx file for it is around 4 meg.  There are 12,500 messages in the file.

We would like to cycle every 24 hours if possible.  We are hoping it will be easier to find messages if the entire day is in one place.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

This depends on a couple of things.

1. The release level of Cloverleaf(R) – older than 5.6 IDE SMAT was really slow on larger files (I don’t know what the threshold there might be because we used the TK SMAT for most of our prod files).

2. The file size limit (if there is any) in your O/S.

3. The performance of your network, platform, etc.

I don’t think there is an absolute size (other than the O/S limit) but rather a comfort level you determine in your environment.

We are running 5.4.1 on HP-UX

The 8 meg file does load slow but that size is not the norm.  A more typical size is 1 meg.

So 24 hr vs 12 hr only takes us to 2 meg.

We can try it and see the trade off between easier to manage but slower to load.
