I am starting the planning on new interfaces between two systems which our hospital does not directly control.  One would be our new HIS registration system and would control our Master Patient Index(MPI).  The second is a RIS, but it can not accept an ADT message from us nor will it allow us to update their MPI.

I need to somehow translate the Patient ID(MRUN) from our MPI to the MRUN on the RIS system.  The HIS vendor is suggesting that Cloverleaf maintain an EMPI on it and have Cloverleaf do the translation.

Merging the two MPIs into a single one on Cloverleaf would be quite a bit of work initially, but I would also need to keep both systems up to date with any new patients entered into either system(or at least whenever a new patient requires an order in RIS).

I don’t have an accurate count on unique MRUNs on our current system, but I believe it’s 200,000+ if that helps determining how much processing it would require on the system.

Does Cloverleaf support an Enterprise MPI?

Has anyone else done this at their hospital?  Do you accept ADTs from the two systems and merge this information on Cloverleaf?

If you know of a good solution for this problem (even a non-Cloverleaf or non-Lawson solution), please let me know of this.

      Thank you.

          Gregg,

If the RIS doesn’t accept ADT, how does the patient that was registered in the HIS get updated/entered into the RIS?  Is it manually entered?  Many systems have the ability to store an external ID that they receive and can pass it back on the interface.  Often times this is pulled/sent from PID:2 or PID:4 on the HL7.

I would not recommend trying to manage a PatientID cross-reference on the interface engine; that is not the role of the interface, but of the HIS.  My $.02 worth.

            I agree with Jim,

Healthvision does market a product that will do MPI and is integrated with Cloverleaf. Talk to your Account Executive to get more information or go to the Lawson/Healthvision Web page to get what informatin is there then call th Account Executive to get someone out to explain what they can do.

The product is not a Lawson/Healthvision product but is remarketed, etc by Lawson/Healthvision I understand. It is supposedly one of the leading MPI products around.

The patient is manually created in the RIS if it doesn’t exist.

During the manual order entry, our MRUN is entered into a comment field of the order in the RIS.  The RIS interface uses that field to populate our MRUN field when it sends ORM updates and the ORU.  Our MRUN can’t be stored within the patient database section of the RIS.
