Removing an empty segment from a message

What is the easiest way to remove an empty segment from a message? I want to be able to do this from a tcl proc and be generic enough to pull any empty segment out prior to sending the message out of the engine.

  If your variant has the segment as required, you will get empty segments.
  
  Change your variant to make them optional, and I think they will go away.
