We  have been using cloverleaf sense before it was called cloverleaf.

We have production server with a seperate test server. This way we can test the AIX upgrades and patches without hitting the production server.

I now have a new manager who insisits I create a development stating that that is the industry standard.

I don’t have a problem with creating it. Simple enough to do.  I ‘m just not sure how useful it will be.  He has no idea how the engine works or what it really is at any detail level.  So he can’t tell me what I’m supposed to do with it.

Is anyone out there using the three environments ?

What do you really  use the Developement envrionment for ?

Has it been any help ?

We have 3 environments….Live, Test and Dev….and they are like they sound.  Live is you production environment, Test is actually a copy of Live but it uses the Test Port numbers and IP Addresses….TCLs, Xlates, Routes, etc are the same as Live.  This is to eliminate any development code (because development does not stand still while we test an upgrade of 1 or more applications).

Dev has the same port numbers and IP addresses as Test but will lots of code that we are testing….

It has been a help when you are working on a complex situation and you want to remove the variables from the problems you might be having while testing…..

More and more CIOs are moving in this directions…..our new CIO wants to put this in place for other applications but we already had it there….

We have 5 environments here. I won’t bore you with the details but this subject comes up a lot. It seems to have a lot to do with the meaning of the word “is” is.  8)

The three environments you are asking about are usually defined as:

            1) Breaks a lot, no guarantee it will be running. (DEV)

            2) Shouldn’t break. For user testing. (TEST or QA)

            3) Never breaks. We make our money here. (PROD)

Then throw in terms like MOCK, CERT and have a nervous break down.
