We have a an HTTP interface that use to send information to an immunization registry. If the registry is unable to process the message for whatever reason then send us back a NAK with an error explaining why. I log those NAK’s to a file. Right now it takes a while to find the message in the SMAT file that caused the error and then research what part of the message was incorrect and then fix the issue and resend.

What processes and tools do others have in place to do this type of error handling? I would like to pass this off to the helpdesk, but the process is too cumbersome right now.

      Thanks,

          Eric,

One option would be to send an e-mail to a responsible party when you receive such a response.  We have several configurations where upon receiving an HL7 AE response, we send an e-mail message containing enough information about the error (extracted from the message itself) to the responsible party of the sending system for resolution.
