How to handle A17 (Bed Swap) if receiving system can’t

We are sending ADT’s to our Nurse Call system and they are unable to process A17 (Bed Swap) transactions.  They’ve asked us to send them as two A01 transactions.   This doesn’t seem right to me.   Our Nurse Call  vendor is West-Call.  Has anyone else run into this?  How did you handle it?  I appreciate any input.

It should be 2 A02 (transfers) messages unless 2 people cannot be in the same bed.  Then it’s 3 A02 messages (one of them putting someone in a dummy bed for purposes of the swap).

Is it the vendor that is saying use two ADT^A01 messages?

If so it may be that is the way their system works. Some systems are not sensitive to receiving multiple admits for the same patient (one for the original admit another as part of a ‘bed swap’).

Basically I try to find out what the vendor wnats for their system first. If they don’t seem to know, then I suggest alternatives.

Depending on the system you may even be able to get away with two A08 messages.  Some systems pay no attention to what bed the patients are comeing from, they just update the bed they’re in.

Thank you all for your help.  I was able to create three A02 messages from the A17 bed swap message.  I really appreciate everyone’s input.  You were all great and really helped me a lot!
