Is there a way to create an HL7 variant that has a subfield added to an existing field.  I can see where a new field can be added, but not a subfield.

          Mark,

I don’t think so. This has been in the request bank.

However, I think you can still build a subfield in your Xlate by simply using the proper notation i.e. 1(0).0(0)…..[0]. Note the square bracket for subfield notation.

You can change that field to a different field with a data-type that has more subfields.

Bill, what I did was change the data type for the field I was trying to add a subfield to from Composite to String.  My assumption was that String would accept just about anything, but it didn’t work.  What data type would you suggest?

                Hi,

Jim’s suggestion works fine. As long as the field is defined as CM (Composite) you can add as many sub fields as you want no matter how the field is defined in HL7.

I’ve used this a number of times since Jim suggested it to me a few weeks ago.

                Regards

                Garry

Are we still not able to build subcomponents into the variants similar to PV1:7 where the ID Number, Given Name, First Name, etc… exist.  Or possibly add a datatype.  I see 5.7 has a file called datatypes that looks like it would support additional types for possible customization.

                  Any ideas? Answers?
