HL7 message size limit

What message size threads and testing tool can handle? I’m getting HL7 MDM-RTF messages via TCP-IP from a vendor. The messages are not getting routed. I see the full message in the log file. But, no errors. Resend from SMAT to file show the message size to be 640kb. Testing tool–>XLT and Routes seem to be stuck with “Please wait ……”

I’m wondering if the thread and testing tool can’t handle the 640kb message size.

I’m checking with the vendor to see why the messages are so large as it wasn’t this way when we did the testing and validation.

You may want to try running the test via command line; sometimes the GUI will hang when testing with large volumes or large messages.  Simply set up everything in the testing tool just like you are going to run it in the tester, then copy the resulting command from the GUI to the command line and run.  You should see output doing it this way.

        Hope this helps.

        Jim,

I tried doing that and got the same results(hangs) in command line too.

How long are you allowing it to hang?

The engine allocates the memory for and then reads the messages and it does this before it does anything else, including responding to the command you ran.  For particularly large message volumes or particularly large messages (our rule of thumb has always been about 500kb although that was strictly empirical) you can expect an hcicmd or the testing tool to time out before the read is complete.
