Help function in desktop failing

We are running the 5.8.5 client on Windows 8.1. Recently the help function has failed. When selecting Contents, Index or Search all that is displayed is the search dialog. The subsequent search will not execute. We can navigate through all the help topics without issue, this one function is broken.
We have been using the desktop client on 8.1 for 5 months or so w/o issue. This is a new bug as we had tested the client extensively before using it in the prod environment.
Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions on how to make it work again?
