We are spec’ing out an LIS, and as expected, this includes an order/ADT feed from several foreign hosts into Cloverleaf, and a result feed from the LIS into Cloverleaf.  We are also planning on setting up an interface to a reference lab, where we would send out orders, and they would send back results.  I would assume that Cloverleaf could route the appropriate messages inbound or outbound.  Has anyone set up threads in this fashion, and specifically, could this be acomplished with a single feed into Cloverleaf from the LIS for results and ref. orders, and a single feed out to the LIS for ADT’s and ref. results.

The answer really depends on the lab vendor. If they can accept all different type of messages on one thread, and if they will send all message types on one outbound thread, you’re fine. Whether orders get routed to the reference lab or to one of the foreign labs, cloverleaf can handle that routing.

One thing to consider {a.k.a. “my two cents”} in having a limited number of threads in/out of the lab system is message volume. If you have several sending systems, sending multiple message types, the message volume may be such that it is advantageous to have more threads for load distribution.
