Sandi,
No Tcl needed.
Someday this will be corrected in the GUI I have been assured.
In the GUI change the length to something other than what it is (this is so you can get a fields file in the formats directory for your variant).
Now go to the formats/hl7 directory, change to the version number directory that your variant resides in, change to the variant directory therein, using your favorite editor change the length in the fields file for the field in question to -1, save the file.
Now go back to your Xlate and reconfigure so it picks up the variant change.
DO NOT change that field again in the variant. In 5.6 you can look at it but other have indicated on other releases even looking at it will cause the -1 to go away – not good but at least you know how to change it back.
The -1 means infinite size (no size limit imposed).
