Has anyone done device integration from ventilators (or other RS232 devices) to Epic (or other system) using Cloverleaf?

The primary devices that we are interested in are Puritan Bennett 840 ventilators. We’re considering several options.

We could have Cloverleaf connect through the devices through a terminal server and translate the data stream using an FRL to HL7 translation.

We could use middle-ware from Capsule Technologies which is designed to provide this solution.

We could attach a small Linux appliance to each ventilator running Mirth which would read from the serial port, translate to HL7 and queue messages before sending them to Cloverleaf. This would help deal with network or Cloverleaf outages without losing any data.

Does anyone have experience solving this type of problem?

I have done it twice at two different client locations. Both times we use Capsule to connect to devices and then send data to Cloverleaf/Egate.

At CDH, we are in the throws of a mega device intgeration with Epic that uses Philips bedside monitors, and a whole bunch of other things (anesthesia carts etc …).

All interfaces will pass through our Cloverleaf engine. For the non-Philips monitors, we will be using iSirona. We did look at Capsule and determined that iSirona was the way to go for us. A much cheaper solution.

We did have issues with connectivity with Philips initially. The inbound thread needs to be considered as the client. If you set it up as a server, like most of your other inbound threads, you’ll experience many disconnects. It took us a while to figure this out. Once we switched it, connectivity was extremely stable.

I see that there are a few other device integration vendors out there: Hill-Rom, Nuvon. Has anyone looked at those?
