      All –

We upgraded last week from 5.3 to 5.6. Everything tested fine, but this is production! We found some bugs that have been addressed in subsequent patches – so that will be the next thing.

Here’s my question to the group – what applications do other people use for remote monitoring? If I’m working at my desktop or at home, I open my own client session. However, we have a 24/7 help desk. Sometimes the operator will call about strange behaviour. The issue for them is that the actual monitors for the Help Desk are high on a wall and across the room from the operators. They can see color changes on the threads, but not much else.

Most recently, we were using Dameware. It allowed them to have an adequate view from their desks, and we were able to see their exact screen, but this seems to wreak havoc with the GUI’s. It often turns the whole screen gray, so we never do see what the operators saw.

What other applications are folks using for remote monitoring? Is anyone using pcAnywhere or other such applications?

We can use VNC to connect to a PC that is running the network monitor for all of our sites.

We also have the Cloverleaf tools installed on Citrix, so we can launch them on any PC.  Our Citrix apps are also available remotely through our VPN.

My suggestion would be to use Global Monitor because its Web-based.  We connect to our network from home via VPN.  Global Monitor works well over VPN.  The GUIs tend to be a little harder to use over VPN especially if you don’t have a very fast connection.

We have used PC Anywhere in the past and it works fine until out admins push out an update and we had to constantly reinstall and I got tired of doing that.

I went back to using what comes with MS Windows because that always worked.

So now I use Netmeeting if working on one PC collaboratively and I use Remote Desktop if I just want control on the PC for myself.

In fact, when we hosted the level 3 Cloverleaf training, every PC was NetMeetinged into the insturctors PC attached to the overhead, so we all had the overhead view and the view on our PC right in front of us.

I agree with you that having the view right in front of every indiviaul is much easier to see than blur on a far away overhead.

Display issues like size and colors tend to happen with any remote control software when the display resolution and color settings differ between the 2 PC’s, so try to make them as close as possible to reduce the burden of the remote control software to resolve the descrepancies or play with them to find one that is tolerable.

For example, if the PC you are taking control of has a very high color setting and your PC has a much lower color setting that can result in the grey appearance you are discribing.
