Check for alpha-character prefix

Hello,

Does anyone know how one goes about testing for alpha characters in a field?  For example, in PID 18 I need to determine if the prefix is of alpha character or numeric (eg. A0034678 or 00045678.  I am doing this in an xlate.  If it is an alphacharacter I am to continue processing the message; if numeric than do something.

Femina,

There is a tcl command that you can use to test for alpha characters.  You can do it in a translaiton using the string command.

string is alpha $xlateInVals
