      Hello,

I am wondering if my understanding of BULKCOPY is off.

I have one HL7 ORM variant translated to the same variant with a BULKCOPY. In my understanding, that should copy everything directly over. I am testing the translation with 12 messages that all test OK in the HL7 variant testing, but this one little message is not translating correctly. For this one message, it is just copying the MSH and then the PID, and then stops…with no errors.

Am I incorrect in assuming that everything should be copied over in a simple bulk copy of one variant to the same variant?

      Thanks,

      Julie

          Julie,

The first thing I would do is to use a hex tool (hcihd will do) to make sure there is not something amiss at the end of the PID in the offending message (like a misplaced carriage return or line feed or whatever.

I don’t think the variant tester will give you as much information as to what is wrong as the Xlate tester (but maybe you meant the Xlate tester).

            Julie,

You also want to make sure that the segments that you expect to be copied appear in matching groups and occurences for the message in question.

              Hi,

              Thanks for you replies.

              What I have is an HL7 2.3 variant, let’s call it ‘Var_A’

I have 12 messages that I tested in the HL7 tester for ‘Var_A’ and they all parse well.

I have a translation that translates a ‘Var_A’ ORM to a ‘Var_A’ ORM with the only translation command being a BULKCOPY.

My intention is to do a BULKCOPY and then null out some optional segments that the receiver does not want to see. However, the initial BULKCOPY is not doing what I assumed it would, which would be to copy an appropriately formatted HL7 ‘Var_A’ message to and exact copy of that HL7 ‘VAR_A’ message. The translation tester works fine on all of my test messages with the exception of one little message, even though that one message passed the HL7 ‘Var_A’ testing. Also, I do not see any hidden/special/extra characters in that message when doing a hexdump.

Should it do as I am assuming?

              Thanks,

              Julie

                Julie,

Given using the same variant/message for both in and out the BULKCOPY should work as you think.

So that means there is something wrong with the offending message.

You are sure you are not getting any mis-matched IR tags or other error messages?

Have you tried extracting that offending message into its own file and just running that one message through the tester (should get the same result but you never know).

Have you tried sending the offending message through the Xlate within a running engine (in test of course)?

Sorry I am not more help but I don’t use BULKCOPY very much.

Oh….Do I feel silly! I just rechecked the transaction ID like you suggested….it was an ORU…not ORM.

                  Arggg…almighty!

Well, I now trust in and can forever depend on BULKCOPY.

Thank you for your time and your patience and your help,

                  Julie
