Client was asking about 22 xml transactions we sent to EMR. I found the 22 transactions/messages in our outbound thread to the EMR. So the client is happy and we are working on the content. But I am not happy – the problem is that the inbound thread SMAT DB does not show any messages at all (with no filter or criteria).

The outbound thread SMATDB shows these messages having a source of the inbound thread – so these messages did come from that inbound thread, but the inbound thread is just not saving the messages to the SMATDB.

The inbound thread was troublesome setting up and we had to get Cerner on the phone to reconfigure the interface. They did not have the stop and start bytes enabled – what we call MLP they call ‘framing’. So they added framing and now we are getting the messages. They asked us not to use ACKs. So there are no ACKs going back to them.

Does that impact how and when messages are saved in the inbound SMATDB?

Follow-up – maybe its a SMATDB problem. When I use the SmatDB display, and choose only the outbound thread SmatDB file, I see the 22 messages.

When I leave that SmatDB file checked, and also check the box for the inbound SmatDB, no messages show at all. I thought that checking more than one file acts as an OR criteria. Maybe there is something in the inbound SmatDB that is corrupting the view and preventing even other selected SmatDBs from showing their results?

I’ll stop the thread and move the SmatDB files to another directory.

final – maybe – followup – I recycled the inbound thread and now I have the inbound messages in my SmatDB display.

I’m still wondering if the ACKs have anything to do with it. I’ll see if the behavior repeats today.

Peter, there might be a simple explanation for the behavior you are seeing.

If you opened the OB SAMTdb by right clicking a thread in the NetMonitor and choosing “SMAT -> Open Outbound”, then the SMATdb tool will open the file for you, but it also creates a “hidden” search criteria of “META  Save Context == outbound”. You can find “feature” this by clicking the down arrow button called “Expand Advanced Criteria” in the Search Criteria box in the SMATdb tool. With this feature, adding any “inbound” smatdb files to your search will reveal no inbound messages. Simply delete the line from the criteria list and your IB messages, if any, will appear.

Here’s a simple screen shot of the “feature” for an Inbound SMATdb file:

Well that might be it! I will look for that tomorrow when we get the next batch – thank you
