When you run the HCIHOSTID command, what does it look at to generate that number?

We had done a snapshot of our VM and done a restore later, just to find out the hostid had changed.  So I’m trying to figure out what the HCIHOSTID is looking at.

I believe it is looking at the actual machine name, similar to the hostid command in UNIX or perhaps the hostname command in Windows.

Well, I know it’s not the MAC address nor the Hostname.  That give’s me a different value.

I searched the forum: hcihostid appears to use ‘certain physical parameters’ of the environment. So not sure which. But I also read that it shouldn’t be a problem, as long as you use the correct hcihostid program and your VMware server remains the same.

Have a look at these threads:

hcihostid is based off the MAC address. If you change the primary MAC address back to what it was prior to the restore, hcihostid will be as it was previously.

Now, what if you have the same MAC address but a different IP?

      Does that affect the hcihostid?

No, it doesn’t. I didn’t think it would, but I verified by changing the static address associated with the virtual machine on which I have Cloverleaf installed. The hcihostid command returns the same value as previously.
