Steve Fraser is working with me on our Cloverleaf 6.0 upgrade project.

We are upgrading from Cloverleaf 5.6rev2 to Cloverleaf 6.0 running under AIX.

Steve Fraser ran across an inconsistancy when validating our EBCDIC SNA/TIF interfaces from the mainframe.

Steve has run a test he mocked up which works on cloverleaf 5.6rev2 to replace NULLs with “_” but the same test fails on Cloverleaf 6.0.

Steve has convinced me the -cvtnull switch to msgget no longer works in cloverleaf 6.0 like it did in cloverleaf 5.6rev2.

Steve Fraser asked me to post this email from him:

      Cloverleaf 6.0 msgget [code]Cloverleaf 6.0 msgget

Why do you need it?  The cvtnull flag was for back in the old days when Tcl could not handle nulls.  Tcl can now so we never use the flag.

My intent was to help Inform be aware of something that stopped working maybe with the release of Cloverleaf 6.0 but definitely since 5.6.

Thanks for posting because we wanted to know first if we needed to go through the inconvienance to work around something that has been in place working for 17 years.

If “msgget -cvtnull” has been depricated along the way after Cloverleaf 5.6, we need to know that so we can discuss how we want to approach remeidiating it.

I will be meeeting Monday with Jim Kosloskey and Steve Fraser to discuss if it is time for us to come up with a work around ourselves.

              Greetings,

Gentlemen, I take it that you are working with IBM EBCDIC type data

that gets loaded with null characters and need to scrub them out

If that is true then yes ! that functionality ought to be operational.

Fortunately for our shop we got rid of the last IBM mainfram application

that loved to dump those nulls into the data.

Backing you guys up to get it fixed.

Yes we still have an EBCDIC feed from a mainframe (SMS/CARE/Invision) which is still our main HIS system.

I’m confident with the depth of talent on our team we can produce an effective alternative to using “msgget -cvtnull”.

First I wanted to determine if we should be spending our time that way.

Plus I wanted to make others aware of our findings in case they might still have an older mainframe/EBCDIC interface, too.

I’m starting to think I should perhpas consider the -cvtnull swith to msgget depricated as I move forward from Cloverleaf 5.6rev2 to Cloverleaf 6.0.

We decided to implement a work around today by stacking one of our reuseable TSP procs (tps_regsub).

I’ve included a partial screen shot to illustrate.
