Fail over Windows versus Linux

Does anyone have experience with having a clustered environment and having the primary server fail/lockup?

We are interested in finding out if the backup server did its job in both a windows environment or Linux.

I seen where having a windows domain controller with backup domain controllers did not work when the PDC stopped functioning, but stayed online. In this case the BDC did not take over the functions of the PDC.
