      Hello,

We are going to upgrade from Cloverleaf 5.3 to 5.7. We are also upgrading our server in the process. We are trying to decide which OS to go with when we upgrade. Are there any benefits of running Linux over Windows, if so what are the benefits?

      Thank you,

      Garrett

Linux is open source so you won’t run into Windows licensing issues.  Typically, Linux is better at managing TCP socket connections than Windows.  We went with a Windows server because with the limited IT staff we have, most of us were familiar with the Windows server environment.  If you have staff that are familiar with Linux, you might want to head in that direction.

A RedHat license with support is $1/year. The Linux tools (grep, sort, tar, etc.) are amazing. Also, I believe the *nix system having slightly better I/O performance although that may be debatable in some circles.

Thank you to everyone who replied. From what I have heard I think we will try to head the *nix route.

Also, I called McKesson support and Bob Swanson told me that Linux has the ability to stop/start the Lock Manager for sites indivigually, where as Windows only has 1 Lock Manager for all sites.
