    All,

We’re upgrading v. 5.5 to 5.7.  Have a few questions and would appreciate any feedback:

    1. We’re on RH 3.4.6 for v 5.5. The newer v. 5.7 requires RH 5.0/5.1.  If we update the Linux version first, will the PROMOTE version process for v 5.5 run on the updated RH Linux 5.x?

    2. What are the latest patch levels for 5.7? Are there any outstanding bugs or issues?

    3. How does 5.7 resource use compare to 5.5? Are any additional resources suggested?

    4. Are there internal changes in 5.7 that would cause an existing TCL running in 5.5 to fail?

    5. Any general feedback on upgrade from 5.5 to 5.7 would be appreciated as well.

Sorry for the long list; appreciate the help,

    Jerry Hayes

We are on cloverleaf 5.5 with RH Linux 4 and are looking to go to Cloverleaf 5.7 too.

I take it by your response that Cloverleaf 5.5 will run on RH Linux 5 or do we have to go to Cloverleaf 5.6, then do the Linux upgrade then move to 5.7?

      Thanks in advance.

I do not believe that 5.7 is certified on any version of RedHat lower than 5.0. I would check the documentation to be sure. I would recommend going to Cloverleaf 5.7 and RedHat 5.1 at the same time. When we did it, we encountered no issues whatsoever.

      Max,

Could you share a little about what version you upgraded from and the benefits you have realized with Cloverleaf 5.7?

      Thanks,

      Jerry

      Jerry,

We currently run both test and procuction on the same box.  I would have an issue testing if we just upgraded like that.  We also cut over one site at a time (we have 4 in production) so that our users never even know we are upgrading.

I am thinking we will have to take the slower route going with Cloverleaf 5.6 then the Linux upgrade and finally the Cloverleaf 5.7.

With Cloverleaf 5.6 and RedHat 5.0 we had an issue where the SAN would cause RedHat to go into a read-only state which of course would crash Cloverleaf. The root problem is actually with the EMC SAN version we were using. RedHat 5.1 handles those errors better than 5.0 did. Cloverleaf 5.5 is not certified for RedHat 5.1, so we decided to upgrade to Cloverleaf 5.7 and RedHat 5.1. This was the main reason for the upgrade. However, many of the features of 5.6 were also very appealing, especially the improved alert system. After all was said and done, the upgrade was relatively easy.

I take it from what you are saying we might be better going CL5.6 then RH5.1 then CL5.7.  Is that correct?

We have always done our upgrades in the past so that our users did not even notice it ever happened, not even a blip.  We thoroughly test before moving to production but both our test and production systems run on the same box.

No way to test our test system with the new OS and version without effecting production.  Now you see my dilemma.  We also have a very strick change management process here as well.  Testing can’t be skipped.

Donna, in my opinion, I would schedule a downtime and do the RedHat and Cloverleaf install at the same time. It is well worth going to 5.7.

Unfortunately that is not an option.
