I have a couple unofficial guides to HL7 vers. 2.3 standards,  none from HL7.org .

My guides  inform me the only required field in the MRG segment is the ” Prior Patient ID ” (field 1)  .

Can anyone confirm ?  or deny ? And offer some documentation or link to documentation.

I have a vendor that informs there are OTHER  required fields.

      Thanks for your attention

          Paul,

The MRG-1 field (prior Patient ID) is the only Required field of the MRG segment based on the Standard.

However, a trading partner (in this case the vendor you reference) can specify they require any of the other fields for their purposes. That is something that needs to be negotiated.

I would expect that the vendor’s specifications show the fields in that segment the vendor considers required.

            Thanks Jim ,

The “trading partner” ( destination system) does require additional field(s) but unfortunately our source vendor  ( as per the HL7 standard) does not supply the additional fields for us to send them.

              Paul,

Time to have an integration meeting involving the sending system folks, the receiving system folks, and you.

This needs to be hashed out among the three interested parites and/or their designees.

Obviously, one cannot make up data out of thin air so either the sending system needs to agree to collect or send the information, or the receiving system needs to reconsider some of their requirements, or perhaps if the data is stored but cannot be provided in the message from the sender, another mechanism for collecting the data can be devised.

Certainly, if no agreement is reached, the receiving system will never be properly integrated.

Yes , you are right . A meeting of the minds is necessary.

Unfortunately one of the minds requires funds which are unavailable and too late in the

                project to get approval.

We are in discussions now with the one of the partners to print an error report if the

field is missing. The closest we have come to a solution.

                Thanks again Jim
