sometimes i see files under exec/processes/process name that are named something like core.27569 or core.4375

any idea what these are?  i try and open them in text editors and it is all jibberish.

(also note, I am running Cloverleaf 5.6 on Red Hat Enterprise 5.2)

you have undoubtedly had some issues that caused Cloverelaf(R) to take a memory dump.

          Those files are the dumps.

If they are occurring with some frequency you had better check it out. There should be incications in the process and/or error logs that indicat the dumps are being taken. That should give you some clue as to what is trying to happen in Cloverleaf(R) at that time.

If they are old they are probably not of any value.

If you want to see what is in them, you could use hcihd – although I don’t think that will be very enlightening.

There may be a dump reading utility available but unless you know what you are looking for I don’t know how useful that would be.

These files are probably best used directly by support.

I found a file called ‘core’ in the $HCIROOT directory.  AIX says this:

core: AIX core file fulldump 32-bit, hcitpstest

The file size is 24mb.  It is just jubberish in vi.  What is this file and can I delete it?

This would be a good question for a FAQ or Wiki. 🙂

You can safely delete core.* files, but you may want to investigate why your processes “core dumped” (crashed).

              Gary,

I think that is a memory dump created by the tps testing tool when a tps type Tcl proc was tested.

Did I mis-use the term? I get the core files when the process crashes, like with a bad IF statement (in 5.6 rev2).
