Editor to Uncompress via FTP

Does any one know of a free editor that can

1) FTP to a read files

2) Be setup to uncompress the file if it is compressed when it opens it.

We have some staff here that want to look at log files that are compressed after one day. I am trying to avoid having them use command line prompts. There are also many files in the directory and the files names are long making it harder to do properly from the command line.

  Edit Plus is a Windows app with FTP capability. It will not read compressed
  
  files. I would suggest that you put a copy of the files in another directory,
  
  for the purpose of review, and delete them on a regular basis.
