We are trying to cluster two machines in a VMS cluster to run IDX/GE’s Flowcast or what ever they are calling it today.

Our systems programmers have gotten to a point where the clustering works but if they fail over, I have to change host names to connect.

Has anyone successfully clustered IDX/GE with a (floating?) ip address or dns name? And if so, how did you do it?

We looked at ‘forwarding’ on Cloverleaf, but I don’t want to learn a new trick with something I don’t believe will work anyway. The way I understand from what I’ve read, the thread won’t forward until retries are exhausted. Is that for every message or will forwarding turn on and stay on? Further, what happens if they failback, does the forwarding stop? Or is forwarding a manual thang?

          Michael,

I think Forwarding is a manual thing. I think at one time they were going to imbed forwarding rules in Cloverleaf(R) but I think it was decided that one could always wriote Tcl to decide when to forward or do it from the command line or the GUI.

The thing I don’t like about it is there is no outward sign in the GUI (and maybe elsewhere) what thread is being forwarded to. There isn’t even a connecting arrow to indicate the potential of forwarding as I recall.

I also cannot recall if there is any change to the Icon when a thread is forwarded.

We had the same situation with failover in our AIX HA environment with multiple NIC cards. Our Administrators solved that one for us so that now all we have to worry about are receiving systems that have firewalls in place and filter out by connecting IP address.
