IB Multi server port connection

Sorry if this has been asked before. Is there a recommended maximum number of IB connections that should be set up via a multi-server port thread? Or does that simply depend on the volume of traffic?

Also, what happens when multiple sites send messages simultaneously? Will they experience a delay/possible timeout/failure in transmission or will the engine handle them all?
