Can anyone tell me if the SoftLab product(s) utilize the standard HL/7 escape technique (Chapter 2 Section 9 of the Standard) for separators described in MSH-1 and MSH-2 found imbedded in fields in the message?

For example if the sub-component separater described in MSH-2 is & (and the escape separator in MSH-2 is ), does SoftLab express the & in data as T?

      Thanks,

      Jim Kosloskey

          From my documentation for Soft:

          1 Field Separator  |

          2 Encoding Characters  ^ ~ &

This is their standard, but the document does say “may vary”.

I checked the our trace files and see \T\ for the &.

              Jim,

We just got thru a task with SCC where the SoftPath application was throwing delimiters in the outbound reports.  They have a fix for this problem but you should have your lab folks go over their test codes and descriptions to make sure that they are not using delimiters in these fields (“&”).  When this breaks in path, it’s usually easily recognized by the receivers, but the ampersand in a description could be easily overlooked.

SoftLab, SoftMic and SoftPath all have different output streams, so if the problem is fixed in one, it may not be corrected in the other subsystems.

                Terry,

So if the descriptions, etc. have a separator imbedded, does SCC escape that properly in the message or not (with the fix)?

                Thanks for the info…

Nope.  We found it less painful to fix the test codes and descriptions rather than have the vendor properly escape all the fields.

The fix was only for the report output from SoftPath.

                    Terry,

Once again a vendor charging what I assume is big bucks and probably proudly proclaiming their product to be HL/7 compliant cannot even adapt to the most basic concept of structured messages.

                    End of rant…

                    Thanks for the information,
